SeaWorld San Diego Mourns the Sudden Loss of Young Orca Amaya

A female orca named Amaya (pictured) fell ill on August 18 at SeaWorld San Diego and died suddenly the following day

SeaWorld San Diego is deeply saddened to announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Amaya, a young orca beloved by guests and animal care teams alike. Amaya, aged six, passed away on April 14th, leaving behind a community that cherished her playful spirit and gentle nature.

Amaya - whose name means 'night rain' in Japanese - was the youngest orca at SeaWorld, where her mother Kalia and father Ulises still live

Amaya was born at SeaWorld San Diego in December 2014 to mother Kalia, and she quickly captured the hearts of all who met her. Known for her vibrant personality and boundless energy, Amaya was a joy to watch as she swam and played alongside her pod.

The cause of Amaya’s untimely death is still under investigation, and preliminary findings suggest a sudden illness. The team of veterinarians and animal care experts at SeaWorld San Diego are working diligently to determine the exact cause of her passing.

In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, SeaWorld San Diego is providing support to its animal care team, who are deeply affected by Amaya’s passing. The park has also expressed its gratitude to the community for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.

Amaya’s passing serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment we have with the ones we love. SeaWorld San Diego remains committed to the well-being and care of all its animals and will continue its mission to inspire and educate visitors about the wonders of the ocean and its magnificent creatures.

Rest in peace, dear Amaya.
